Types of Data and Central Tendency Flashcards
Types of categorical data
Nominal, Ordinal, Scale
Nominal
Simple categories like yellow, green and blue or male and female
Ordinal
Categories that can be ranked. Bronze, silver, gold medals or small, medium and large size
Scale
Discrete counts like numbers of coins in a pile or eggs in a nest
Continuous
Measures like length of a finder measured with a ruler. Always an in between value so not categorical.
Which measure of central tendency is most influenced by very large or very small values in the datset
The mean is influnced by any extermely large or small values (called outliers) within the dataset. This will be particulary pronounced when the dataset is small!
Which measure is most influenced by outliers?
Range
Which measures of variance are mathmatically linked?
Sample variance, standard deviation and standard error
