Data produced by the researcher for the purpose of the study
What is secondary data?
Data that already exists and was created for the purpose of different research
what are the two types of data?
quantitative and qualitative
what is quantitative data?
numerical data in the form of numbers
what is qualitative data?
data in the form of words
what are some examples of quantitative secondary data?
crime statistics
census
league tables
suicide statistics
what are some examples of qualitative secondary data?
diaries
ofsted reports
newspapers
letters
what are the advantages of primary data?
have control over quality of data
can control how its gathered
data is exactly what you need for your research
what are the disadvantages of primary data?
can be a very long and expensive process to collect
need to have the right skills and resources to collect it properly
it can be hard to reach the right people/get enough responses
what are the advantages of secondary data?
readily available
cheap/free
often uses large samples
reliable
published regularly (can track changes/patterns)
what are the disadvantages of secondary data?
might not be exactly what you are looking for as it was created for other purposes
official definitions may not be the same as sociologists
may not be reliable
may not be valid (dark figures)
