Types of data Flashcards
Define quantitative data
Numerical observations/ measurements
(Number of trees)
Define qualitative data
Non-numerical observations
(Eye colour, scent of candle)
Define continuous data
Can take any value or possibility of being measured to and infinite degree of accuracy.
(Height)
Define discrete data
Can only take particular values
(Shoe size)
Define ordinal data
Numerical data that can be sorted into a natural order (often has rankings). Spaces between positions are not necesarily equal.
(League position of a footbal team)
Define categorical data
Numerical/ non-numerical data that can be sorted into non-overlapping categories so that each peice of data is only recorded once.
(There are too many people on their phones in school. Do you:
Strongly disagree, Disagree, Neither disagree not Agree, Agree, Strongly Agree?)
Which of these could be ordinal data?
A: The marks gained in a test by the number of students
B: The position of dogs in a dog show
C: The colours of sweets
