- What is Dispositional Crisis ?
An acute response to an external stressor.
Example of Dispositional Crisis.
Jenny reported to high school nurse that her mother drinks too much. She is drunk every afternoon when Jenny gets home from school. Jenny is afraid to invite her friends over because of her mother’s behavior.
Intervention :ALANON
Example of Dispositional Crisis
Spouse has been having difficulty with his boss at work. He goes home and explodes on his wife because dinner was not ready. He hit and punched his wife. Next day wife goes to ER
Intervention : Physical care of wounds and DV screening should be done in ER. Mental Health counselor provide
support and guidance of alternatives.
Nurse should encourage and empower to clarify needs and issues so referrals for agency assistance can be made.
What is Crises of Anticipated Life transitions.
Normal Life cycle transitions that may be anticipated but over which the individual may feel a lack of control.
Example Of Anticipated Life transitions.
Mother’s last child going to college. She has never worked outside of home and all she has down is meet the needs of her spouse and children.
Intervention : Begin grief work and assist her to recognize areas of self worth separate and apart from her children.
What is Crisis resulting from Traumatic Stress ?
Crisis precipitated by and unexpected external stressor over which the individual has little or no control over and as a result of which he or she feels emotionally overwhelmed and defeated.
Example of Crisis from Traumatic Stress.
Someone who is beaten and raped. Her wounds are healed but she has flash backs, fearful afraid to be alone and etc.
Intervention : Nurse should offer patient to talk about experience and express feelings. Nurse should offer reassurance and support and offer grief response and identify support systems.
What is Maturational and Developmental Crisis ?
Crisis that occurs in response to failed attempts to master developmental tasks associated with transitions in the life cycle.
Example of Maturation and Developmental Crisis.
Mother having child and finds out her own mother has cancer. She is becoming more anxious yelling at spouse and threating to drop child off at adoption agency because they are unfit parents.
Intervention : Anxiety reduction.
Consider risk of child. Parenting skills class.
Crisis reflecting Psychopathology.
A crisis that is influenced or triggered by preexisting psychopathology. Examples include Personality disorders, anxiety disorders , bipolar disorders and schizophrenia.
Psychiatric Emergencies.
Crisis situation in which general functioning has been severely impaired and the individual rendered incompetent or unable to assume personal responsibility for their behavior. Examples include acutely suicidal individuals, drug over doses, reactions to hallucinogenic drugs, acute psychoses, uncontrollable anger and alcohol intoxication.
