Crisis Intervention
An emergency type of assistance in which the intervener becomes part of the individual’s life situation. The focus is to provide guidance and support to help mobilize the resources needed to resolve crisis and restore or generate an improvement in previous level of functioning. Usually last no longer than six to eight weeks.
Disaster
A natural or man made occurrence that overwhelms the resources of an individual or community and increases the need for emergency evaluation and medical services.
Prodromal Syndrome
A syndrome of symptoms that often proceed the onset of aggressive or violent behavior. These symptoms include anxiety and tension ,verbal abuse and profanity, and increasing, hyperactivity.
Crisis
A sudden event in one’s life that disturbs homeostasis, during which usual coping mechanisms cannot resolve the problem. Crisis results in a disequilibrium from which an individual requires assistance to recover.
Characteristics of Crisis
- Can occur in all individuals/populations.
- Crisis are precipitated by specific identifiable events.
- Crisis are personal.
- Crisis are acute
- Cris situation contain the potential for psychological growth or deterioration.

PHASE 1. Exposure to precipitating stressor.

PHASE 4. No resolution in previous phases, major disorganization occurs.

An acute response to an external situation stressor.
Dispositional Crisis Class One
INTERVENTION
Physical care of wounds and screening for Domestic Violence issues should be conducted in ER. The mental health counselor can provide support and guidance in terms of presenting alternatives to her. The ER nurse should encourage and empower victims so referrals can be made.
Class TWO
Crisis of Anticipated life transitions.
Normal life cycle transitions that may be anticipated but over which the individual may feel a lack of control.
Class Three
Traumatic Stress
Crisis precipitated by an unexpected external stressor over which the individual has little or no control and as a result of which he or she feels emotionally overwhelmed and defeated.
Class Four
Maturation and Developmental Crisis
Crisis that occur in response attempts to master developmental tasks associated with transitions in the life cycle.
