what is social influence?
Social influence is the scientific study of the ways in which people’s thoughts, feelings and behaviours are affected by other people.
what is conformity?
Conformity is the tendency to change what we do, think or say in response to the influence of real or imagined pressure from others.
what are the three types of conformity?
- compliance
- identification
- internalisation
what is compliance? and what is the reason behind it?
conforming publicly but continuing privately to disagree. It’s temporary so views are weak.
Reason: to gain approval or avoid disapproval
what is identification? and what is the reason behind it?
we act the same as the group because we share their values and want to be acceptable. The views are maintained when part of the group but not when they leave the group.
Reason: because you want to be part of the group
what is internalisation process? and what is the reason behind it?
when a person conforms publicly and privately because they have accepted the views of a group. Permanent change so views are strong.
Reason: Genuinely accepts the groups views
what is anchoring?
getting told things and latching on to them, not straying too far from it.
what is framing?
Telling people things in a positive way will make them feel good about it
