Identification
Occurs when we change our behaviour and/or opinion when we want to identify with a particular group
- we desire a relationship with members of the group
- public conformity but not necessarily private change of opinion
Compliance
A change in our behaviour but not our opinion as a consequence of a request from someone
- often relies on rewards or coercion by someone in power
- public conformity but not a private change in opinion
Internalisation
A change in our behaviour and in our opinion
- internalisation of others’ views or opinions are more likely to affect how we think, feel and behave
- stems from knowledge and credability
- public and private conformity
Conformity
A change in behaviour as a result of real or imagined group pressure
- can be defined as yielding to group pressure, publicly and sometimes privately as well
