Types of conformity: compliance, identification, internalisation Flashcards
Define conformity
Conformity refers to how an individual or small group change their behaviour or attitudes as a result of the influence of a larger group, where there is no direct request for them to do so.
Define compliance
Agree publicly, disagree privately. Compliance is where the individual changes his or her own behaviour to fit in with the group. Superficial.
Give an example of compliance
Laughing at a joke you don’t find funny or wearing a suit to a formal occasion.
Define identification
Change behaviour publicly and privately. Often it is a temporary change where we adopt an attitude or behaviour because we want to be assosiated.
Give an example of identification
Joining a gang or joining a yoga club or becoming a goth
Define internalisation
Where you change your behaviour publicly and privately, it’s not temporary and the opinion is permanently altered and adopted by the person
Give an example of internalisation
Becoming vegetarian or becoming a Buddhist monk
What is normative social influence?
Where someone wants to fit in with the larger group, they want to gain approval or avoid disapproval they do not want to stand out.
What is informative social influence?
Where someone learns something that changes their behaviour, this refers to instances where people conform because they are uncertain of what to do in a particular situation (they look to others for guidance).
