Situational variables effecting obedience: proximity, uniform, location Flashcards

1
Q

How does uniform effect obedience (milgram)

A

Uniform increases obedience, there was a 45% decrease in obedience when the experimenter did not wear a lab coat

Q

How does proximity effect obedience (Milgram)

A

Milgram found that the distance between the experimenter and the participant influenced the obedience rate, this was probably due to witness consequences.

Q

How does location affect obedience

A

Some locations increase the perceived legitimacy of the authority figure. In milgrams study the experimenter had a high amount of perceived authority when they had a prestigious location and when they didn’t there was less obedience.

Q

What research evidence supports the role of proximity in obedience

A

Milgram found that when the teacher and learner were brought into the same room, obedience dropped to 40% .

When the experimenter left the room and gave instructions over the telephone obedience dropped to 20.5% from the previous 65% obedience rate,

Q

What research evidence supports the role of location and uniform in obedience

A

Bickman (1974) found that 92% if pedestrians obeyed an order to give a stranger money for a parking meter when the person giving the order was dressed as a security guard.

Milgram found that when he moved the experiment to a shady downtown area obedience decreased from 65% to 48%

Q

What is the negative factor of Milgrams research

A

Fails to consider other factors that may be important in understand obedience. Kilman and Mann (1974) replicated Milgram’s study in Australia but found that only 16% went to 450V but 85% in Germany. This shows that different society’s have different obedience levels
