types of conformity and aschs conformity Flashcards
name the 3 types of conformity
1)internalization
2)identification
3)compliance
define the term ‘compliance’
. a temporary/superficial change in someone’s behavior.
. The change in behavior only lasts as long as the group is monitoring them.
. a desire to fit in and be accepted or avoid disapproval.
define the term ‘identification’
. individuals take on beliefs and behavior’s of the group as they value it and want to be apart of it
. do not agree with all the views of the group
. public and private change in opinion
.this is usually temporary and not maintained when individuals leave the group.
define the term ‘internalization’
. deep type of conformity
. takes on majority view and accepts it’s correct
.it leads to far-reaching and permanent change in behavior, even when the group is absent.
what was the procedure of Asch’s research into conformity
1) 123 American male students selected
2) two white cards on each trial. On one card there was the standard line, the other card had comparison lines A,B and C - one of which the same length as the standard line.
3) in each trial participants said which line matched the standard line out loud.
4) groups of 6-8 only one being a genuine participant unaware the rest were confederates. Confederates gave the incorrect answer on 12(out of 18 trails) trials-critical trials.
what were Ash’s findings in his research to conformity?
. real participants conformed to incorrect answers 37%
.75% of participants conformed at least once.(critical trials)
.25% of participants never conformed.
. in Asch’s control group with no confederates less than 1% of participants gave incorrect answers.
afterwards an interview was done participants said they conformed as they wanted to fit in and had doubts over their accuracy.
evaluate Asch’s research into conformity
1)it is an ethical issue-participants were deceived as they thought confederates were genuine .However, this was necessary to test conformity or else data collected would be different.
2)participants were put through psychological harm. They were under pressure of having to decide whether to publicly agree or disagree with the group. Bagdnoff et al found that participants put through an Asch like
