Who suggested that there are three ways in which people conforn to the opinion of the majority?

What is Compliance?
Changing your behaviour to those of a group WITHOUT changing your true opinion
What is there a desire to do when complying?
A desire to avoid group pressure, seeking to ‘fit in’
Public and Private what? (Compliance)
Public agreement but Private disagreement
When does the agreement stop in Compliance?
As soon as the majority influence is removed, it is not permanent
What level of conformity is compliance and can you give an example?
It is a shallow level od conformity eg. Laughing at a joke even though it is not funny.
What is Identification in terms of conformity?
Changing your behavuor and behavior because you want to be part of the group
What desire is there in Identification?
A desire to be accepted as a member of the group
Public and Private what? (Identification)
There is Public agreement and some Private agreement because you value the groups opinions

What level of conformity is Identification and can you give an example?
It is a moderate level of conformity, changes in behaviour are often permanent.
Eg. Going to see a band that you do not like.
What is Internalisation in terms of conformity?
Changing your behavior AND opinions to those of a group and truly believing in it.
What desire is there in Internalisation?
There is a desire to adopt a new belief system.
Private and Public what? (Internalisation)
There is private AND public agreement
What level of conformity is Internalisation and can you give an example?
It is a deeo level of conformity and always leads to a permanent change.
Eg. Your religious/political belief
