What is conformity?
Where an individual is influenced to change their behaviour, attitudes and/or beliefs. This change occurs as a result of inference or pressure from others which can be real or imagined
What is another name for conformity?
Majority influence
What are the three types of conformity?
Compliance, identification and internalisation
What is compliance?
When an individual agrees publicly with the group but their internal private beliefs and views remain in disagreement
What strength of conformity is compliance?
It is a fairly weak and temporary form
What is identification?
An individual adjusts their behaviour and opinions to those of the group publicly and privately but it is not maintained when the individual permanently leaves the group
What strength of conformity is identification?
It is a moderate strength and generally temporary
What is internalisation?
The individual permanently changes their beliefs and agrees publicly and privately when they leave the group their views don’t change back
What strength of conformity is internalisation?
The strongest form and it’s permanent
What is an example of compliance?
When you become a vegetarian at university but you will eat meat when you come home
What is an example of identification?
Whilst you are at university you will always be a vegetarian but when you finish university you will stop being a vegetarian
What is an example of internalisation?
You become a vegetarian at university and when you leave university you remain a vegetarian
