What is conformity?
yielding to group pressure when an individuals behaviours and beliefs are influenced by a larger group of people
Type of Conformity: Compliance
-Publicly going along with majority influence to gain approval
-Adjusting behaviour and opinions to those of a group to be accepted/avoid disapproval (desire to fit in)
-Weak and temporary as only in presence of a group
-only being mean to someone when in presence of a group, when alone nice
Type of Conformity: Identification
-Public and private acceptance of majority influence to gain approval
-Adjusting behaviour and opinions to those of a group as membership of group is desirable
-Stronger but temporary as not maintained when individuals leave the group
-Engaging in army marches when apart of the army, but only with army colleagues not when alone
Type of Conformity: Internalisation
-Genuinely adjusting behaviour and opinions to those of a group
-Individual exposed to belief systems of others and decides what they truly believe in
-Public and private acceptance if group belief+behaviour seen as correct
-Strongest as not dependent on presence of group for maintenance
-watching a film liked by others but enjoying the film and liking it yourself
