Role of social influence processes in social change Flashcards
Social change: process
Moscovici(1980)
-Minority influence changes attitudes and behaviours over time, incurring a strong, long lasting form of conformity.
-Individuals direct thinking at understanding why minority hold a particular viewpoint-> conversion to minority takes place
-moment of critical mass where minority viewpoint becomes that of the mainstream SO majority begins to conform through compliance but only public not private as people may still hold original views
-For permanent social change, more people need to conform to new viewpoint through identification
-As social change slow, gradual process of conversion, allows for change to occur in a manner that is not too disruptive to the social order,
-Like conformity, obedience serves to maintain existing social order -> as social change occurs, obedience will serve to uphold the new social order
