- results in superficial change
- a behaviour / opinion stops as soon as group pressure stops

- moderate form of conformity
- where we act the same as the group because we share their values & want to be accepted
- we conform because there’s something about the group that we value
- publicly change our opinions, even if we don’t privately agree
- change of belief is temporary

internalisation
A
- deepest level of conformity
- where a person genuinely accepts the group norms, publicly and privately
- permanent change as attitudes are internalised
- change in behaviour persists even in the absence of the group
