What is meant by conformity?
Conformity means to go along with group social norms be it implicit or explicit. This can be private, public, temporary or permanent
What does explicit mean?
Stated clearly and in detail, leaving no room for confusion or doubt
What does implicit mean?
A law suggested, although not directly expressed
What terms are used to describe types of conformity?
Change in behaviour, Public/Private, Temporary/Permanent, Deep/Shallow
What is meant by Compliance?
The shallowest form of conformity, where the person conforms publicly but privately still disagrees. An example would be laughing at a friend’s unfunny joke because everyone else is
What is meant by Identification?
Where a person conforms both publicly and privately with a group, however this is only a temporary shift and can change over time. An example may be supporting a new football team if you move area.
What is meant by internalisation?
This is the deepest form of conformity where someone maintains the behaviour both publicly and privately permanently. An example could be becoming a vegan permanently
