Types of cells Flashcards
what is the most common primary cell and what does it include
zinc-carbon cell. zinc casing acts as a negative electrode and a carbon rod which acts as a positive electrode. paste of emmonium chloride acts as the electrolyte.
when are zinc-carbon primary cells commonly used
for AA or AAA batteries
what happens when a zinc-carbon primary cell discharges
the zinc casing eventually wears away and the corrosive contents of the electrolyte can leak nout
button cell
contains mercury being reduced at the anode and zinc being oxidised at the cathode
primary cell
a battery designed to be used once and discarded, and not recharged with electricity or reused. the electrochemical reaction occuring in the cell is not reversible. reactants are stored within the cell and will eventually run out
secondary cell
has the same structure as a primary cell, with the anode and cathode swapped places. its a type of electrochemical battery that can be charged, discharged into a load and recharged many times.
