Renewability Flashcards
renewability
the abilty of a resource to be replaced by natural processes within a relatively short period of time
non-renewable fuels
a fuel that is finite and will run out at some point becuase it is consumed faster than it is replenshed
renewable fuels
a fuel that can be replenished at a rate faster than or equal to the rate at which it is consumed
advantages of fossil fuels are
higher energy content, current systems of transport and electricity rely on fossil fuels, been reliable for large scale energy production,
disadvantages of fossil fuels
takes millions of years to form (non-renewable, prices increase), burning pollutes atmospjhere with harmful gas (CO2 and SO2)
SO2 effect
acid rain
how can the disadvnatges of fossil fuels been lessened
both CO2 and SO2 can be captured upon burning to prevent being released into the atmosphere (but expensive)
advantages of biofuels
carbon neutral, renewable, sustainable, reduced emissions and pollution, can reduce the amount of waste going into landfill, production can provide money for less developed countries as they have space to grow the crops required
disadvantages of biofuels
high costs, land needed for food production, removes nutrients from ground/large amounts of herbicides and pesticides, lower energy content
why are biofuels high cost
conversions of engines and machinery from petrol or diesel, harvesting and transportation of
