Types of cells Flashcards
1
Q
What are the 6 types of cells you need to know?
A
Ciliated cells - movement of mucus in the trachea and bronchi
Root hair cells - absorption
Palisade mesophyll cells - photosynthesis
Neurones - conduction of electrical impulses
Red blood cells - transport of oxygen
Sperm and egg cells (gametes) - reproduction
2
Q
Ciliated cells
A
- Designed to stop lung damage
- They line all the air passages in the lungs
- They have tiny hairs called cilia
- Hairs sweep mucus with trapped dust and bacteria back up the throat.
3
Q
Root hair cells
A
- Designed for absorbing nutrients
- Has a large surface area which helps it to absorb water and minerals.
- Thin cell walls make it easy for minerals to pass through.
- Found in a plant root
4
Q
Palisade mesophyll cells
A
- Designed for Photosynthesis
- Found in the top of a leaf
- Tall and has a large surface area to absorb water and minerals
- Packed with chloroplasts to help make plant food.
5
Q
Neurones
A
- They are long
- They have connections at each end
- Can carry electrical signals
- Their job is to carry nerve impulses to different parts of the body.
6
Q
Red blood cells
A
- Designed to carry oxygen
- Found in blood
- Large surface area for oxygen to pass through
- Contains haemoglobin, which joins with oxygen
- Has no nucleus
7
Q
Sperm cells
A
- Head contains enzymes and nucleus
- Found in the testes
- Very small and has a long tail that provides movement so it can swim and find an egg cell
- Enzymes allow it to digest into an egg cell and join with it
8
Q
Egg cells
A
- Designed to be fertilised
- Found in the ovaries
- Large and bulky
- Contains yolk which provides a large food store for the new cell being formed
9
Q
Haploid definition
A
A sex cell (gamete) that contains one set of chromosomes
