Types of catalyst Flashcards
What are the two types of catalyst?
Homogeneous
Heterogeneous
What are homogeneous catalysts?
In the same state (phase) as the reactants
What do homogeneous catalysts form?
An intermediate with the reactants
What happens to the intermediate formed by the homogeneous catalyst?
Breaks down to give the product
Regenerates the catalyst
What are heterogeneous catalysts?
The catalyst is in a different phase from the reactants
What is an example of a homogeneous catalysis?
depletion of ozone
Write the equation for the depletion of ozone
2O3 (g) (Cl. catalyst) ⇌ 3O2 (g)
Explain how the depletion of ozone is a homogeneous catalysis?
Chlorine radical (Cl) and ozone are in the same (gas) phase
Cl reacts with ozone to make an intermediate ClO which then is reformed afterwards
What is an example of a heterogeneous catalysis?
Haber process
Write the equation down for the harbour process
N2 (g) + 3H2 (g) ( Fe (s) catalyst) ⇌ 2NH3 (g)
Explain how the harbour process is a heterogeneous catalysis
Iron catalyst is in a different phase (solid) to nitrogen and hydrogen
