are often referred to as the workhorses of the maritime business. As the name implies, these ships are designed specifically to carry dry cargoes in bulk like grains, fertilizers, phosphates, and coal or iron ores. These can be easily identified by large box-like hatches on deck.
BULK CARRIER
These ships are the smallest of the bulker categories according to size. Its has a deadweight cargo carrying capacity of up to 39,999 tons mainly for carrying small bulk cargoes.
Handysize Bulkers
are designed to represent the majority bulk carriers flexible for carrying more cargo to small ports situated inside narrow channels with considerable draft restrictions and length difficulties.
Handymax and Supramax
This vessel normally has a capacity between 35,000 and 50,000 dwt
Handymax
This vessel is quite larger in size with 50,000 to 60,000 dwt.
Supramax
are named as such to enable safe passage through the narrow Panama Canal, and they are more versatile than larger vessels with regard to accessing different trade routes.
Panamax
These vessels have a slightly larger cargo carrying capacity than panamax ves- sels because of larger beam construction and shallower draft.

Capesize
are the largest of the bulker category with cargo carrying capacity of more than 200,000 dwt.

One of the earlier types of ships before the specialization are general cargo ships. As they are called, “general” implies to the diversity of cargoes that they can accommodate.
