Two main types of breast cancer
A
- Non invasive breast cancer
- Ductal carcinoma in situ - Invasive breast cancer
- Ductal invasive breast cancer
- inflammatory breast cancer

What is ‘Ductal carcinoma in situ’?
A
- pre invasive cancer - malignant cells do not invade beyond the duct into the breast tisue
- picked up due to abnormal calcification of the breast
- potential of becoming invasive in the future

Management of Ductal carcinoma in situ
A
- Wide local excision or mastectomy depending on size of the tumor
- no axillary surgery/chemotherapy/radiotherapy
- high grade DCIS may require post operative breast radiotherapy

How does DCIS present?
A
usually assymptomatic
- detected by mammography showing microcalcification

What is Paget’s disease?
A
- patch of eczema around the nipple

What is inflammatory breast cancer?
A
- highly malignant carcinoma causes lymphatic invasion.
2. presents as red, hot, swollen breast

A
- mammogram
2. nipple biopsy performed
