- hard & heavy
- surrounds cancellous bone
- comprises of units called lamellae - sheets of collagen aligned in parallel patterns.
- supplied with oxygen and nutrients through blood supply within structures called Haversian canals or patrons

A
- less dense and softer of the two types
- ends of bones and surrounded by compact bone
- highly vascularised and photos tissue where blood cells are created
