Types of bonds Flashcards
Ionic Bond
A type of bond formed between two elements (or polyatomic atoms or one element and one polyatomic atom) (one metal and one nonmetal) where the metal gives its valence electrons to the nonmetal element to fill its outer shell making two ions which then attract to one another to form an ionic bond.
Covalent Bond
A type of bond formed between two elements (or polyatomic atoms or one element and one polyatomic atom) (both nonmetals) where the two compounds/elements share electrons to fill their outer shell. This forms a covalent bond.
Synthesis
Two or more substances combine to form a new substance
Synthesis Formula
A+B=AB
Decomposition
Occurs when a compound breaks down (needs heat or electricity generally)
Decomposition Formula
AB=A+B
Single Displacement
Occurs when one element replaces another element
Single Displacement Formula
A+BC=AC+B
Double Displacement
Occurs when the positive ions of two compounds switch
Double Displacement Formula
AD+BC=AC+BD
Combustion Reaction
A Decomposition Reaction that is caused by fire
Single Displacement
Occurs when one element replaces another element
Single Displacement Formula
A+BC=AC+B
Double Displacement
Occurs when the positive ions of two compounds switch
Double Displacement Formula
AD+BC=AC+BD
