Types Of Biomes Flashcards
Tundra climate
Temperature below 0 degrees for most of the year and only reaches around 10 degree in the summer
Low precipitation, often less than 250mm
Short daylight hours in winter
Tundra vegetation
Few plants can live here mostly lichen and moss
Trees and rare and stunted
Boreal forest climate
Mild summers (generally 10-20 degrees) very cold winters, well below 0 degrees
Low precipitation (less than 500mm) mainly in summer
Boreal forest vegetation
Coniferous trees such as pine
Temperate forest climate
Warm summers (around 18 degrees), cool winters (around 5 degrees)
Precipitation all year (around 1000mm)
Temperate forest vegetation
Deciduous trees such as oak
Temperate grasslands climate
Hot in summer (25 degrees), very cold in winter (as lower as 40 degrees)
500-900mm of rainfall per year, most in late spring and summer
Temperate grassland vegetation
Short grasses with very few trees and bushes
Desert climate
Very hot all year(above 30 degrees) but cool nights (large diurnal temperature range)
very low rainfall (less than 250mm per year)
Desert vegetation
Plants are scares and have water storing features ,spines, instead of leaves and extensive root systems
Tropical grassland climate
Hot all year (25-35 degress)
500-1000mm of rainfall per year but always with a dry seasons
Tropical grassland vegetation
Tall grasses, with some drought adapted shrubs and tress (e,g baobab)
Tropical forest climate
Hot all year (25-35 degress)
Wet all year annual precipitation (200-300mm)
Tropical forest vegetation
Dense forest with several layers of trees with other plants competing for light
