Types of attachment Flashcards
what is the strange situaiton
an experiment to assess the quality of a babies attachment with a caregiver
name the categories that were created to measure in the strange situation
- proximity seeking
- stranger/separation anxiety
- exploration
- response to union
outline the procedure of the strange situation
- baby encouraged to explore by caregiver
- stranger enters approaches baby and talks to mum
- caregiver leaves
- caregiver returns, stranger leaves
- caregiver leaves baby alone
- stranger returns
- caregiver returns
what were the findings of the strange situation
they found the babies acted in certain ways,
they identidied three types of attachment
list the three types of attachment that they identified
- secure attachment
- insecure-avoidant attachment
- insecure resistant attachment
outline the features of secure attachment
- appy to explore
- seeks proximity
- moderate seperation anxiety
outline the insecure avoidant attachment
- baby explores freely
- does not seek proximity
- little seperation/strangeranxiety
- avoids union stages
outline the insecure-resistant attachment
- baby explores less
- seeks proximity
- considerable separation/ stranger anxiety
- resists comfort
what are the strengths of the types of attachment
- good predictive validity, McCamish et al discovered kids with secure attachment do better at school
- good inter-rater reliability as more than one observers
what are the limitations of the types of attachments
- culturally bias, it does not consider other cultures,
- fourth attachment has been discovered,
for example Main and Solomon discovered a fourth attachment- resistant-avoidant, which takes the reliability
who discovered the fourth attachment
Main and Solomons
Resistent- avoidant
