Types of Airspeed Flashcards
What are the different types of airspeeds?
Indicated, Calibrated, Equivalent, True and Ground airspeed
What is Indicated airspeed?
Read off the instrument
What is Calibrated airspeed?
IAS corrected for instrument and position errors; obtained from the manual or off the face of the instrument.
What is Equivalent airspeed?
CAS corrected for adiabatic compressible flow at a particular altitude.
(exp. At airspeeds above 200KIAS and altitude above 20,000 ft, air is compressed in front of an aircraft as it passes through the air. Compressibility causes abnormally high airspeed indications, so EAS is lower than CAS.)
What is True airspeed?
Actual speed your airplane moves through undisturbed air.
CAS corrected for nonstandard temperature and pressure; obtained from the flight computer, manual, or the Airspeed indicator slide computer.
Note: Add 2% of the IAS for each 1,000 foot increase in altitude (assuming conditions are close to standard temperature).
What is Ground speed?
The actual speed of your airplane over the ground.
TAS corrected for wind; speed across the ground; use the flight computer
What is standard Atmospheric Pressure and Temperature?
Atmospheric Pressure is 29.92 in. Hg.
Temperature is 15°C (59°F)
