What does conformity mean?
Change in person’s behaviour as a result of peer pressure
What does compliance mean?
When an individual changes their public but not private view to Match the group
What does internalisation mean?
When an individual changes public & private view. Group genuinely changed person’s mind plus long lasting
What does indentification mean?
Individual changes public views to match they group because they value the group
What does informational social influence mean? ( explanation’s of conformity)
The desire . right- need for certainity
What does informational social influence lead to ?( ISI )
Seek information from others to change beliefs
What does normative social influence mean? ( NSI)
The desire to be liked- need for acceptance
What does normative social influence lead to ?
Compliance with especially strangers & identification with friends
What’s 1 strength of the ISI ?
LUcas asked students to give answers to maths questions that were easy or more difficult. Greater conformity to incorrect answers the more difficulty
What’s 1 limitation differences in NSI ?
Doesn’t affect everyone eg people not concerned with being liked.McGhee & tee van 1967 found students with high need of affiliation ( need for relationships with others more affected) more likely to conform
