What are the two types of laws?
Statutory and common
What are statutory laws?
They are a set of laws that were passed by the parliament and signed by the king
What are the 2 statutory laws called?
-Statutes(laws made by the state legislature)
-Acts(laws made by the federal legislature)
What are common laws and what are they used for?
When judges look to other court rulings for guidance in deciding their cases. (Compare the current case to past ones)
Natural law
Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness (rights)
Case law
Prior court decisions
How many types of laws are there in the usa?
There are five laws in the US
Civil law
This law helps people settle disagreements between money, businesses,family issues, etc.
Military law
Criminal laws that only apply to people in the military.
Criminal law
Laws that make certain actions a crime (felonies and misdemeanors)
-In a criminal court case, it is always the government vs. the person
Juvenile law
laws that apply to children 18 and under (truancy and curfews)
Constitutional law
The constitution, bill of rights and federal rights that protect our rights under the constitution
