What is physical abuse?
Physical force resulting in physical injury, pain or impairment
What are the signs of physical abuse?
- Specific complaint
- Unexplained injuries
- Behaviour changes
- Weight, teeth and hair loss
What is emotional abuse?
Infliction of mental pain, anguish or distress
What are the signs of emotional abuse?
Specific complaint
Weight loss or gain
Nervous habits e.g nail biting
Depression or confusion
What is sexual abuse?
Non-consensual sexual contact including rape, molestation and conduct with a person unable to consent
What are the signs of sexual abuse?

Behavioural changes
Avoidance of undressing
Wearing extra layers of clothing
What is neglect?
Not caring for someone’s basic needs e.g proving food, shelter and health care

Poor appearance or hygiene

What is institutional abuse?
Lack of quality care due to an institution e.g lack of staff
What are the signs of institutional abuse?
Absence of visitors
Poor keeping of records/documents
Poor standards of care
What is bullying?
Repeated behaviour intended to hurt someone
What are the signs of bullying?
Belongings damaged/lost
Physical injuries
Behavioural changes
Being affraid to go out/to school
