What is safeguarding?
Safeguarding means to protect vulnerable children and adults from harm and abuse
What is abuse?
When an individual is hurt or mistreated
What is child abuse?
When children are mistreated. Includes neglecting their basic needs and hurting them either physically or emotionally
What is elder abuse?
A single or repeated act or lack of appropriate care that causes harm where there is a relationship of trust
What is physical abuse?
The use of force that can result in pain, physical injury or impairment
What is sexual abuse?
The act of permitting sex on an individual where consent has not been given. (non consensual conduct or contact e.g. rape)
What is emotional abuse - what is this also known as?
Psychological abuse
The infliction of mental pain anguish or distress
What is neglect?
A failure to meet someone’s physical and psychological needs
What is institutional abuse?
A form of abuse that takes place in a care setting due to a lack of adequate practices and/or policies.
What are the signs that someone is being physically abused?
Their behaviour suddenly changes
Poorly explained injury
What are the signs that someone is being sexually abused?
Reports of anal/ genital pain
Individuals wearing extra clothing
Wetting the bed
Changes in behaviour
What are the signs of psychological abuse?
Verbal assaults
Weight loss or gain
Unexplained physical signs such as bruises where they’ve tried to self harm
What are the signs of neglect?
Anxious Suicidal Poor personal hygiene Passive Socially withdrawn Loss of interest in themselves and their interests
What are the signs of institutional abuse?
Inadequate staffing
Failure to uphold an individuals right to choice, privacy, and dignity
Withdrawal
Anxious in certain environments
What is financial abuse?
When an individual is taken advantage of because of their financial situation
