Types of amnesia
Anterograde and retrograde
Anterograde
Anterograde amnesia is a loss of the ability to create new memories after the event that caused the amnesia, leading to a partial or complete inability to recall the recent past, while long-term memories from before the event remain intact.
Retrograde
is a loss of memory-access to events that occurred, or information that was learned, before an injury or the onset of a disease.
Korsakoff’s syndrome results from
Malnutrition related inadequacy of thiamine (B1) necessary for metabolism of carbs fats, and amino acids
Korsakoff’s syndrome can happen in people who have
Severe malnutrition without ETOH abuse
Korsakoff’s likely the result of being given
Glucose without adequate thiamine and resulting build up of an intermediary metabolite
Symptoms of Korsakoff’s syndrome includes
amnesia and confabulation
