What is conformity
When a person changes their behaviour because of ‘real’/’imagined’ group pressure
Compliance
Agreeing with group but keeping personal opinions.
Identification
Conform to behaviours of group even if we do not agree
Internalisation
Deepest level of conformity, personal opinions genuinely change to match group
Informational Social Influence
When correct behaviour is uncertain, we look to the majority for guidance on how to behave. Results in internalisation
Normative Social Influence
An individual wants to appear normal and be one of the majority, which often results in compliance or superficial change in behaviour.
Evaluation for NSI: Asch+
When interviewed after the experiment, participants said they conformed to avoid rejection by others. Shows people will show compliant behaviour in order to fit in
