  • Obtained from NATURAL SOURCES

Eg. purple from beetroot

What are NATURAL IDENTICAL ADDITIVES?

A
  • Synthetic copies of naturally occurring substances
  • Natural source may be expensive so copies are produced in labs
    Eg. Vanillin from vanilla can also be produced from a plant material LIGNIN

  • Do not occur naturally
  • Made synthetically
    Eg. Saccharin ( sweetener )

How are Additives REGULATED?

A
  • Additives can only be used in a certain range of products that have been approved by EUROPEAN FOOD SAFETY AUTHORITIES the additive is given an E number
  • The number shows its safe and then EU Regular testing is maintained
