What are ADDITIVES?
A
They’re added during processing to achieve specific technological function

What are NATURAL ADDITIVES?
A
- Obtained from NATURAL SOURCES
Eg. purple from beetroot

What are NATURAL IDENTICAL ADDITIVES?
A
- Synthetic copies of naturally occurring substances
- Natural source may be expensive so copies are produced in labs
Eg. Vanillin from vanilla can also be produced from a plant material LIGNIN

What are ARTIFICIAL ADDITIVES?
A
- Do not occur naturally
- Made synthetically
Eg. Saccharin ( sweetener )

How are Additives REGULATED?
A
- Additives can only be used in a certain range of products that have been approved by EUROPEAN FOOD SAFETY AUTHORITIES the additive is given an E number
- The number shows its safe and then EU Regular testing is maintained

- prevent food spoilage
- produce a wide range of products
- enhance flavour
- enhance appearance
- restore a nutrient
- improve texture
- keep prices competative
