Type Of Solids - Ionic Flashcards
METALS and NONmetal atoms form?
Ionic solids
Ionic solids are made out of what particles?
Positively charged ions (cations) and Negatively charged ions (anions)
What are ions held in (structure) and what is the attractive force?
Cations and anions held in a 3D lattice by a STRONG IONIC bond
How much energy is required to overcome STRONG IONIC bonds?
Because of the attraction forces of ionic bonds, they require a large amount of energy to overcome THUS melting p/boiling p is high
Why WONT ionic solid conduct electricity
Ionic solids DO NOT conduct electricity because they are in a fixed position. Ions CANNOT move so cannot conduct electricity
Why can molten/aqueous form of ions conduct electricity
When melted or dissolved in water, the ions are free to move and allows the liquid to conduct electricity
Why are ions brittle
Ions are brittle because when it is an IONIC solid, the bonds are directional so they are not malleable nor ductile. Thus making it brittle
How do ionic bonds shatter
If Oppositely charged ions forced to shift position= like charges line up and repel, causing crystal to shatter
Are ions soluable in water
Ions soluable in water = ions separated from lattice due to attraction to water molecules as it has strong enough to overcome the existing forces between each substance
Are non-polar solvents attracted to ions
No. Ie. cyclohexane no attracted to ionic solids thus insoluble
