Type of molecule Flashcards
Ionic Solids
Composed of a regular 3D pattern or lattice of positive and negative ions (cations and anions) held in place by strong electrostatic attractions or ionic bonds.
Sillica
3D covalent network made up of silicon atoms covalently bonded to 4 oxygen atoms in a tetrahedral shape.
Graphite
is a covalent network solid made up of a 2D arrangement of carbon atoms covalently bonded, each carbon is bonded to three others with a lone pair. Sheets of graphite bonded together by weak intermolecular forces.
Diamond
is a covalent network solid made up of a 3D array of of carbon atoms covalently bonded to four other carbon atoms in a tetrahedral arrangement.
Molecular Solid
composed of molecules bonded together by weak intermolecular forces in a lattice structure
Metallic solids
composed of cations bonded by strong non directional bonds in a 3D lattice surrounded by a sea of delocalized electrons.
