What medications are used to treat Type 2 DM?
A
- 3 main types:
- Increase insulin release
- Increase excretion of glucose
- Improve the action of insulin
- 1st line treatment = Metformin (improves insulin sensitivity) + lifestyle
- 2nd line treatment = Sulfonylurea (increase insulin release) + lifestyle
- 3rd line treatment = Add or substitute 1st and 2nd line agents

What are the important side effects to consider for DM medications?
A
Metformin – Lactic acidosis, GI side effects, vitamin B12 malabsorption
Sulfonylurea – Hypoglycaemia, weight gain
