Type 2 Diabetes Drugs Flashcards
Classes of Type 2 Drugs
Sulfonyureas Meglitinides Biquinides
A - Gluconase Inhibitors Thiazolinediones Amlyn
Incretinmimetic
Sulfonyureas
Meds: Glucotrol (glipizide) (PO)
Micronase (glyburide)
Action: ↑ production of insulin
Tell Pt: hold if blood sugar is ↓ in am and call MD
Meglitinides
Meds: Prandin (repaglinide) (PO)
Starlix (nateglinide)
Action: ↑ production of insulin
Tell Pt: take 30 minutes before meals, skip if skipping the meal. Less risk of hypoglycemic reaction.
Biquinides
Meds: Glucophage (metFormin) (PO)
Action: ↑ sensitivity to insulin
Teach Pt: if having IV w/contrast, hold for 2 days before, day of test, and 2 days after. Possibility of Renal failure, not for Pts. with renal problems.
***Less likely to cause weight ↑ than other Type 2 drugs.
A - Gluconase Inhibitors
Meds: Precose (acarbose)
Glyset (miglitol)
Action: “STARCH BUSTER”
removes carbs, go into toilet, ↓ carbs absorbed in the intestines.
Thiazolidinediones
Meds: Actos (pioglitizone) (PO)
Avandia (rosiglitazone)
Action: “ INSULIN SENSITIZERS” ↓ insulin resistance
Rare to see hypoglycemic reaction unless taken with other DM2 drugs.
***ALERT: can cause HF, do good heart assessments.
Amlyn
Meds: Symlin (pramlintide) (SubQ)
SubQ with insulin, but not mixed together.
Incretinmimetic
Meds: Byetta (exenatide) (SubQ)
SubQ, no insulin necessary
Action: ↑ insulin secretion
