What is type 2 diabetes?
A chronic condition involving insulin resistance and sometimes an insulin secretory defect

What is the initial management for type 2 diabetes?
Lifestyle change:
Aim to lose 5-10kg per year to reduce complications
Change in diet and introduction of exercise
When is a sulphonylurea used as the first stage management in type 2 diabetes?
In patients who are not overweight
In patients who are intolerant to metformin
When can thiazolidinediones be added into therapy?
Added as combination therapy to metformin and sulphonylurea therapy
As monotherapy if intolerant to both
In which patients should pioglitazone not be prescribed?
Heart failure
