What happens in the body of a person with Type 1 diabetes?
All groups of food turn into glucose.
This glucose is not converted into energy.
The body needs the presence of insulin for this to happen, so it is insulin resistant.
Requires insulin replacement by injection l
The body then stores the glucose as fat.
When the body burns this fat, it produces ketones.
Why do people get type 1 diabetes?
Their body is unable to produce insulin, or does not produce enough insulin.
What are the signs and symptoms of type 1 diabetes?
Acute onset
Profound weight loss
Excessive thirst
Polyuria
Lethargy
Abdominal pain
Ketoacidosis
What is type 1 diabetes?
It is a primary failure of pancreatic beta cells to produce insulin.
It primarily affects children and young adults, and is not related to diet.
