Tye Essay Flashcards
Introduction
In the drama, “Romeo and Juliet”, both the nurse and Friar Lawrence play an important role in the events that eventually lead to the tragic end.
1st paragraph
The nurse is Juliet’s confidant. She acts like a mother to Juliet and Juliet confides in her. When Juliet meets Romeo and falls in love with him, she tells the nurse about it. The nurse keeps her secret and even offers to arrange a meeting with Romeo to discuss their wedding plans. The nurse meets Romeo, finds him very handsome, and is excited to go back home and informs Juliet that they will be married that afternoon.
2nd paragraph
However, after the death of Tybalt, the nurse turns against Romeo. She advises Juliet to forget about Romeo and rather marry Paris, a suitor that her parents approve of. Juliet is shocked and disgusted by the advice of the nurse and decides not to confide in her anymore. Therefore, Juliet has to take drastic measures to solve her problem.
3rd paragraph
Friar Lawrence is Romeo’s confidant. When Romeo initially tells him about Juliet, he warns Romeo that they are too hasty. However, he agrees to marry them and keep their secret. He really hopes that the marriage will stop the feud between the two families. When Romeo is banished, he hides Romeo and advises him to go to Mantua. He comes up with a plan to help Juliet when she approaches him.
4th paragraph
Unfortunately, his plan goes horribly wrong when his message to Romeo does not reach him in time. He becomes scared and leaves a suicidal Juliet alone with Romeo’s body when he hears the watchman coming. Although he does everything with the best of intentions, the story ends tragically with the two lovers dead.
Conclusion
Therefore, it is clear that although both the nurse and Friar Lawrence do everything with the best intentions, they play a role in the tragedy since they do not warn these two young people that a lack of communication can have devastating causes.
