The group declared Texas independence and elected Dr. James long as its president. After a string of battles, Long and his men were surrounded by the Spanish Army Long was taken to a Mexican prison where he was shot and killed by a guard 6 months later.

Distance:
Too far away to help support the citizens. Unable to help New Spain.
Taxes:
The Spanish king forced colonists to pay heavy taxes. Took money from churches.
Unfair Laws:
Unfair laws stopped colonists from getting good jobs. The class system kept New Spain’s citizens in poverty.
What did Father Miguel Hidalgo do?
Called for Mexican Citizens to overthrow the government. He died, but inspired people to fight for Mexico’s independence.
Who created the Republican Army of the North.
Jose Bernardo Gutierrez de Lara and Augusta Mcgee created the Republican Army of the North, and declared Texas independent!
What was the Battle of Medina?
The Republican Army battled Spanish forces south of San Antonio at the Medina River. Commanded by General Arredondo, the Spanish overwhelmed the Republican Army and had them all executed.

The BLOODIEST Battle in Texas History.
What happened after the Battle of Medina.
THe Spanish crackdown after the Battle of Medina was so brutal that Texas remained under Spanish control for another 7 years. More than 1,000 rebels were killed.
