Q

ways sleeping helps with learning

A
  • washes away toxins that inhibit brain function
  • allows neurons to for synapsys an strengthen learning
  • allows brain to build scaffoding for learning
  • allows brain to strengthen possitive patterns an remove negative patterns

ways exersie helps with learning

Q

how do you prevent procrastination

A

use pomodoro tech to get over the inital discomfort quickly. after you start doing something the discomfort usually dissipates.

Q

practice makes what

A
  • makes learning permenant
  • counters the natural tendencies for memories to dissipate
  • strengthens the neural network associated with the task

8
Q

why is it better to learn in short sessions instead of all at once?

A
  • allows brain to build scaffolding

describe diffuse mode of thinking

A

activates a larger more dispersed group of less related neurons

Q

If you’re stuck on a problem you’ve been working on for a while? What the next best step?

A
  • Step away from it, switch to something completely different then come back later.
  • Get some exercise.
  • Let your diffuse mode take over.

Q

For the pomodoro to work what should you do?

A

16
Q

things about procrastination

A
  • the feeling of discomfort is associated with the product, but that usually goes away quickly after you start working on something
  • procrastination is switching to something more pleasant for the time being to get away from that unplesant fealing
17
Q

Focus mode is:

A
  • intense concentration you need to work step by step through something
  • a pinball machine that has bumpers tightly grouped together
18
Q

what happens during sleep?

A
  • brain cell shrink and the toxins are more easily washed away
  • brain consolodates memory, less important parts are erased and more important parts are strengthened
  • if you review the material right before you sleep there’s more chance you’ll dream about it which help you deepen your understanding
19
Q

What are ways famous thinkers have accesed their diffused mode.

A

Edison has kept ball bearings in his hand as he drifts off to sleep. he lightly keeps what he was working on in his mind. as he drifts off to sleep and dreams about this work the ball bearings will drop and wake him up. He then takes what he thought of during the diffused mode and brings it into the focused mode to refine.

20
Q

How does being in one mode of thinking effect the other mode of thinking?

A

It seems you’re either in one mode or the other. If you’re in one mode it limits access to the other mode of thinking. You can’t be in both modes at the same time.

21
Q

what are characteristics of working memory

A
  • can hold 4 items only
  • you’ve got to constant repeat to keep it in memory
  • it’s located in the prefrontal cortext
22
Q

what are characteristics of long term memory

A
  • it’s like a warehouse. it can store vast amounts of info
  • it involves multiple parts of the brain
  • you’ll need to repeat the information so you can make sure you can find it
23
Q

How is spaced repetition helpful

A
  • give your brian’s struture time to consolidate
  • spaced repeition over several days is more effective than one long study session
24
Q

creative individuals have these characteristics:

A
  • they’re more open to new experiences
  • they’re less agreeable. they’re willing to now follow the crowd and challenge the status quo
25
Q

ways the gain new perspective about a subject

A

10x exercise. sort of like the video start the person on a lawn, zoom out 10x so you’re 1000s of feet above him, zoom out again (now looking down from earth), zoom out again (galaxy). Now zoom in to below the skin, keep zooming in to subatomic level.

26
Q

How are modes of writing like brain modes?

A
  • writing = diffused
  • editing = focused
27
Q

How should you approach writing

A
  • brain mapping (diffused mode)
  • then just start writing, don’t allow yourself to edit the material
28
Q

How can writing based on memory be helpful

A

it helps you prioirtize things, things that stood out is more likely to be more important or helpful for you.

29
Q

How can memorization be helpful?

A

It can help deepen your understanding in some cases.
