Act 1, Scene 1
Orsino declares his love for Olivia but finds out she is grieving her dead brother and refuses to be seen for seven years.
Act 1, Scene 2
Shipwreck. Viola decides to disguise herself as a boy so that she can work for Orsino.
Act 1, Scene 3
Sir Toby and Sir Andrew engage in excess. Toby encourages Andrew to woo Olivia.
Act 1, Scene 4
Orsino sends ‘Cesario’ to Olivia due to ‘his’ feminine qualities. Viola confides to the audience that she loves Orsino.
Act 1, Scene 5
Olivia allows Cesario to speak with her privately about Orsino’s love. Olivia falls in love with Cesario and sends Malvolio after Cesario with a ring.
Act 2, Scene 1
Sebastian is revealed to be alive and arrives in Illyria with Antonio, the sailor who saves him, who insists on following him even though it is a risk to his life.
Act 2, Scene 2
Malvolio finds Cesario and returns the ‘ring’. Viola realised that Olivia has fallen in love with her Cesario disguise and recognises the consequences.
Act 2, Scene 3
Malvolio disrupts the revelry between Sir Toby, Sir Andrew and Feste. Maria forms a plan to prank Malvolio with a fake love letter from Olivia.
Act 2, Scene 4
Orsino and Cesario discuss love and yearning. Viola expresses her love for Orsino through a story about “Cesario’s sister”. Orsino demands Cesario to visit Olivia again.
Act 2, Scene 5
The prank for Malvolio occurs. Sir Toby, Sir Andrew and Fabian watch while hiding. Malvolio promises to obey the letter: to smile, wear yellow stockings cross gartered.
Act 3, Scene 1
Cesario makes her way to Olivia and encounters Feste, then Sir Toby and Sir Andrew. Olivia demands the others to go away and then declares her love for Cesario.
Act 3, Scene 2
Sir Andrew believes Olivia will never love him and threatens to leave. Sir Toby persuades him that he can win her love if he challenges Cesario to a duel. Andrew writes a letter challenging Cesario.
Act 3, Scene 3
Antonio and Sebastian explore Illyria. Antonio explains his history with Orsino and gives Sebastian some money while they go separate ways.
Act 3, Scene 4
Malvolio visits Olivia dressed ridiculously. She thinks he is insane and puts him in the care of Sir Toby. Toby delivers Andrew’s message to Cesario and they prepare to fight. Antonio is arrested. Antonio believes that Cesario is Sebastian which causes Viola to have hope that her brother is still alive.
Act 4, Scene 1
Feste encounters Sebastian, who he mistakes for Cesario. When Sir Toby and Sir Andrew attack Cesario, Feste fetches Olivia who declares her love to Sebastian, believing it to be Cesario.
