Tutorial A2 q21-30 Flashcards
What is process planning?
A function within a manufacturing facility that determines which processes are to be used to convert parts from their initial form into their final form based on engineering designs.
A Process Plan is then generated and used by schedulers and machine operators.
What information is typically on a process plan?
- What features are to be manufactured
- What tools/machines are to be used
- The manufacturing time of each feature
What are the main steps in process planning?
- Geometry analysis
- Raw material selection
- Process selection
- Process detailing
- Setup, fixture planning and design
- Process Plan analysis and evaluation
What is Variant CAPP?
- Assume similar parts will have similar process plans
- Software used to identify similar parts
- Retrieve them and edit their plans to suit the requirements for each specific part
- Group Technology is adopted to group parts based on geometric or manufacturing similarities
- Can only modify existing plans.
What does CAPP stand for?
Computer Aided Process Planning
What is Generative CAPP?
Automatic synthesis of a plan for a new part rather than human decision making
- Plan is made by using information from a manufacturing process database
- Same procedure as Variant CAPP, just quicker
- Can generate completely new plans
What is workflow?
A ‘sequence of tasks’ or ‘arrangement of processes’ that a product undergoes as it is made.
Each product that is manufactured has ‘flowed’ through a sequence of
production processes having ‘work’ performed on it.
What are precedence diagrams used for?
They illustrate the workflow required to make a product and can help identify the
manufacturing lead time of a production process
What is manufacturing lead time?
The total manufacturing time for a product from start to finish including all
processing time, setup time, waiting time, idle time etc
What are relationship charts used for?
Analysing the plant layout in a manufacturing organisation to best locate
machines/departments based on criteria such as general material flow and safety
What are travel charts used for?
They quantitatively illustrate the pattern and the amount of part movement between departments/machines to help with identifying the critical path in the production process
