Tutorial 7 - trial insertion Flashcards
When trying it into the patient’s mouth, what shall we make sure to do?
If there are rests, ensure these engage the rest seats correctly
Check jaw relation - check maximum ICP - may find a verical or horizontal error in your ICP.
Check appearance
What are some errors we can get in occlusal vertical dimension?
If the vertical dimension is too high, the denture or prosthesis will be over-closed, leading to a too-tight bite. This can cause discomfort, muscle fatigue, and even TMJ pain.
If the vertical dimension is too low, the teeth may be too far apart, resulting in an open bite. This can cause excessive wear on the teeth, poor function, and sometimes even difficulty in speaking or chewing.
What are some errors we can get in occlusal horizontal dimension?
A horizontal error refers to an incorrect anterior-posterior positioning of the upper and lower jaws in relation to each other. Essentially, it describes a situation where the upper and lower jaws are positioned too far forward or too far back relative to each other, resulting in improper alignment of the teeth.
eg:
if the upper jaw is too forward or the lower jaw is too back, it can result in a protrusive bite (overbite) or an underbite, leading to aesthetic and functional issues.
Conversely, if the upper jaw is too back or the lower jaw is too forward, it may result in a retrusive bite or improper occlusion, causing issues with chewing, speaking, and potentially contributing to muscle strain or jaw pain.
Imagine you are replacing all the upper incisors for your patient.
What do you need to check, with regards to appearance?
Shade
Mould of tooth
Centre line
Labial support
Smile line – edge of flange / clasps visible?
Position of incisal edges
If your patient complains that their upper teeth “look like false teeth” what could you do to make them appear more natural?
Can asjust the teeth shape to resemble the patient’s teeth if they have any - eg adding imperfections, making them less uniform
Adjust the tooth size
Change the shade
Add slight colour variations to the teeth
Modify the alignment
What will you write on your prescription card to the laboratory, if the denture requires no alterations?
Please process denture to finish in heat cured acrylic
