What is type 1 diabetes?
A
- autoimmune destruction of beta cells and islets of langerhans in the pancreas
- causes a lack of insulin which results in hyperglycaemia and polyuria

A
- usually between 6-12 years
- polyuria
- excessive thirst
- lethargy
- weight loss

Who is involved in the MDT for diabetes?
A
- paediatric endocrinologist or paediatrician with an interest in diabetes
- paediatric diabetes specialist nurse
- paediatric dietician
- clinical psychologist
- social worker etc

What is required for a diagnosis of T1DM?

Random blood glucose of > 11.1 mmol/l

How is T1DM managed?
A
- insulin SC
- education

What dental problems can arise in children with T1DM?
A
- increased susceptibility to perio
- reduced salivary flow
- increased caries rate
- candidiasis
- infection

What are the dental considerations for a child with T1DM?
A
- prioritise prevention with enhanced techniques
- timing of appointments (early-mid morning usually good)
- require assistance with fasting for GA
- anxiety and fatigue of care
