How do we find the moment of a force?
Force X perpendicular distance from line of action of the force to the pivot.
What is the turning effect of a force called?
Moment or torque.
What is the SI unit for moment?
Newton metre (N m).
What is the principle of moments?
When an object is in equilibrium, the sum of clockwise moments about any point is equal to the sun of anti clockwise moments about the same point.
What is centre of gravity(C.G.)?
The point through which the entire weight of the object appears to act.
What is stability?
Ability of an object to return to its original position when slightly displaced.
How do we make an object more stable?
- Lowering its centre of gravity.
2. Increasing the area of its base.
What happens to an object that is hung freely?
It will always come to rest with its centre of gravity below the pivot.
