How does mechanical Turbulence work?
Stronger winds causes more turbulence.
Irregular ground features - causes eddies.
* Buildings
* Mountains
How does Thermal Turbulence work?
Dry areas results in updrafts. Convection.
Wet areas less so.
How can you avoid or minimise thermal Turbulence?
Fly above the convection layer to avoid.
Fly slower to minimise.
What are the 4 causes of windshear?
Thunderstorms
Microbursts
Low Level Front ( junction of warm and cold air )
Mountains - in the lee side
How does low level front windshear work?
Cold and warm air meeting.
Usually an inversion layer.
Cold air is more stable
Often visible by looking at the clouds
How does a thunderstorm cause windshear?
Significant up and down drafts.
The down drafts will fan out under the cloud.
Resulting in signifcant turbulence and windshear.
What are the 3 factors in the strength of wake turbulence?
Weight
Speed
Pitch
The weight is the most significant
With wake turbulance how far apart and deep is the turbulance?
2 wing spans apart
1 wing span deep.
Near the ground how does wake turbulence spread out?
5 kts horizontally.
How does a mountain cause windshear?
On the lee side.
Stagnent air under the flow.
What is it called when there is tubulence and no clouds?
Clear air turbulence.

Anticpate
Avoid
Report
Beware of mountain lees
How do we treat turbulence?
Avoid thunderstorms
Fly above convection currents
Take care on mountain lees
Observe the earth’s surface
