Turbine Parts Flashcards
Adjustable Runner Blades
curved members on runner which transmit energy from the flowing water to the runner hub
Runner Hub
provides support for the propeller blades and attachment to the main shaft
Crosshead
component inside the hub which changes the angle of the adjustable blades via movement of the operating rod to which it is rigidly attached
Runner Cone
conical lowermost extension on the runner which streamlines the turbine
Gate Operating Ring
changes reciprocating energy to angular force and distributes to wicket gates simultaneously
Wicket Gates
acts as a valve to regulate and equally distribute water flow to the runner blades
Gate Stem
the top and bottom wicket gate extension which supports the gate in bearings
Gate Lever
member rigidly attached to the gate stem which allows adjustment of wicket gate position
Shear Lever
member which ‘floats’ on the gate stem and transmits energy from one gate link to the gate lever by way of the shear pin
Gate Link
member connecting operating ring to the shear lever
Shear Pin
“weak link” connecting shear lever to the gate lever designed to break when an obstruction prevents the gate from closing
Outer Head Cover
outer circumferential section providing support from the upper gate stems, and provides containment and channeling of water leakage from around the upper gate stems
Intermediate Head Cover
middle circumferential section connecting the inner and outer head covers and providing support for the operating ring
Inner Head Cover
section containing and providing support for the turbine bearing and the packing gland housing
Bottom Ring
stationary ring supporting the lower gate stems
Stay Ring
stationary upper and lower radiuses sections, integral with stay vanes which provide support to the top and bottom turbine structure and direct the water into the gates
Stay Vanes
streamlined members which support the stay rings and direct the water through the wicket gates
Discharge Ring
stationary ring which surrounds the turbine blades and guides the water past the blades to the draft tube
Scroll Case
the water passage from the reservoir to the stay ring
Draft tube liner
metal liner under the discharge ring at the entrance to the draft tube, which protects the concrete from erosion
Pit Liner
metal liner surrounding the wheel pit and lining the concrete wall
Turbine Walkway
platform and supporting structure in the wheel pit above the head cover that facilitates inspections and servicing
Servomotor
hydraulic cylinder containing a moving piston which converts fluid into force, for adjustment of the runner blade angle or the wicket gate position
Turbine Guide Bearing
bearing assembly that is mounted inside the head cover which provides radial loading support for the main shaft
Packing Box
separates the water passage from the atmosphere and restricts water leakage past the shaft into the inner headcover
Main Shaft
the member which transmits the power developed by the runner to the generator
Coupling Flange
connecting flange at either end of the shaft for attachment to the runner or generator
Nut Guard
protective cover over the coupling bolts or nuts
Connecting rod
connects the gate servomotor piston to the operating ring
Operating Rod
connects the blade servomotor piston to the crosshead
Oil Head Pipes
concentric oil pipes passing through the bore of the main shaft transmitting governor oil to the blade servomotor
